Research ACTIVITIES AND PROJECTS

My principal research interests are in social inequality;  social stratification;  work and employment; the study of individual and societal wellbeing; and comparative research methodology.

RECENTLY COMPLETED PROJECTS

'European Social Survey: Data for a Changing Europe' (July 10 - Dec 14)

I was a co-investigator on this EU grant that supported the fith and sixth rounds of the ESS. My main contributions in this period have been to chair a review of variables measuring educational attainment and labour market experience; to continue with research into citizens' perceptions  of societal wellbeing; and to feed into a programme of academic outreach.

'Data Architecture Services for the Social Sciences and Humanities' (Jan 12 - Dec 14)

I was a co-investigator on this EU 7th Framework Programme project and the leader of Work Package 3 on Survey Quality. This 'cluster project' brought together staff from five European Research Infrastructures and involved nineteen institutions. WP3 was concerned with creating software that can improve survey design and administration in a number of areas and be useful for the international social survey community. We aimed to ensure wide take-up by creating tools that conform to international metadata standards (DDI3).
